Those not familiar with Latin or architecture may be wondering what a Vitruvian triad is, and why it is relevant to this project. Marcus Vitruvius Pollio was a Roman Architect whose treatise ‘The Ten Books of Architecture’ described the qualities a building should have. These are “Comoditas, Utilitas, e Venustas”, which have been translated as Commodity, Firmness and Delight.
Why is this important here?
It is a convenient shorthand form which has been appropriated by many other disciplines, including software development, and from there into social media. This Venn diagram from a new media agency’s pitch document shows how the Vitruvian triad pops up in all sorts of unexpected places:
